From Underneath The Tree
The point…

So, I’ve been reading this book called “The Next Christians” which I highly recommend. I’ll post a review later. In the book Gabe Lyons talks about Christian culture, which is very interesting as he says that Christians fit into two categories, with different labels for more individualized groups. The two categories are Separatist Christians and Cultural Christians. Again, I’d really encourage you to read it but it’s a pretty good descriptor of what I think is true about Christendom, and that is, most Christians have become less interested in following Christ and more interested in fitting in to a more comfortable category, that is, with a little Jesus, whether we know it or not. And even more, whether or not we would even be willing to admit it. Anyway….

Yesterday I was directed to this little gem, written by Carlos Whitaker on church growth. Go read it and then come back.

And then someone left this comment in response to what Carlos had said and I think it should be the point for anyone who professes a faith in Christ:

“I use to be a muslim with the nation of Islam, and one thing you will never find in Islam. A dr. who’s muslim, a police officer who’s muslim, or a teacher who’s muslim. However, you will find a muslim who is a Dr., police officer, or a teacher. Their faith is more important than anything else and their identity in based on the muslim faith not my job or position. So it is easy for a muslim to talk about Islam because it’s who he is, not what he does. Christainity is what christians do not who they are, so living it outside of the church walls is almost impossible. I am a believer in Christ it’s not just something I do on the weekends.”

You can see the comment in context here. There is so much more I’d love to say but sometimes it’s better to stop talking, maybe allowing things to marinate. More words occasionally make the sky cloudier, if you know what I mean.

What does this mean to you?
